Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff

Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff is the title of a book by Matt Kibbe. It's a survey of the libertarian philosophy of non-aggression. It's probably a pretty good book on libertarianism, alghough I admit I haven't read it. But it's a great title. I love the title and refer to it all the time.

The title is also a pretty good summary of Christian social ethics.

The Bible says "Thou shalt not kill." You may not be a "Calvinist," but John Calvin was correct when he commented,

"The sum of this Commandment is, that we should not unjustly do violence to any one. [U]nder the word 'kill' is included by synecdoche all violence, smiting, and aggression."

A Bible-believing Christian is non-violent.

If someone hurts you, the Bible says don't hurt those who hurt you, but leave vengeance to God (Romans 12:17-21;  Leviticus 19:18).

The Bible says "Thou shalt not steal." In other words, "Don't Take Their Stuff."

If you take these two commandments seriously, you will be an "anarchist." The "archist" believes he has a right to hurt people and take their stuff. Jesus commands His followers to not be archists (Mark 10:42-45). Read more.
