In his 20s, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck served in the French army before turning to the study of medicine and then botany. In his 30s, he began working at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, where he conducted research and wrote on plants and later on invertebrate animals.
Everyone agrees that "Lamarckism," the theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics, has been scientifically discredited. But other than that quirky belief, he anticipated much of what Darwin would say.
