Medes

The Medes are often overshadowed by Assyria, Persia, and Babylon, but Newton does treat them as a distinct kingdom, and they do show up in Scripture (e.g. Daniel).

Thinker / Culture Theology Theonomy vs. Autonomy Cosmogony Politics
Medes (c. 700-550 BC) Indo-Iranian polytheism; worshiped Ahura-type sky gods, fire, sun, and ancestral deities; no worship of YHWH. Later influenced by Zoroastrian dualism. Autonomy — no reference to God’s law; religion centered on magi (priestly caste) who practiced divination and astrology. Creation myths not ex nihilo: world thought to be the product of a cosmic struggle between opposing principles (good vs. evil, light vs. dark). Tribal kingship; later formed a centralized monarchy. Rule by the sword, with divine sanction claimed. Kings and magi together embodied a sacral state.

✦ Notes

  • Theology: The Medes’ religion was a precursor to Persian Zoroastrianism. They revered natural forces (sky, fire). When they absorbed or allied with Persians, Ahura Mazda worship became dominant.

  • Theonomy vs. Autonomy: Like Babylon, the Medes had a class of wise men (magi) whose authority was rooted in occult practice, not God’s revelation. Daniel 6 mentions the “law of the Medes and Persians” as unalterable — but not derived from God’s Word.

  • Cosmogony: Evidence is fragmentary, but by the Achaemenid period, cosmology is clearly dualist: Ahura Mazda vs. Angra Mainyu. This denies creation ex nihilo and introduces eternal conflict instead of sovereign providence.

  • Politics: The Medes established one of the first Indo-European monarchies in Mesopotamia, later absorbed into Persia under Cyrus. Their politics combined tribal autonomy with a “king of kings” structure, justified by divine mandate. In biblical terms, the Median state was part of the succession of empires opposed to God’s kingdom (Daniel 2, 7).

✅ That gives you a clear Median entry: polytheism, autonomy, dualist cosmogony, statist monarchy.
