The random, non-supernatural evolution of life from inorganic matter to human beings requires vast amounts of time. The 6000 years recorded in the Bible is not enough time. To make atheistic evolution seem plausible, the Bible had to be discarded.
Men like Benoît de Maillet (1656-1738) began with naturalism (autonomy) rather than theonomy, and created the science fiction idea of "deep time" (billions of years of earth history). Benedict De Spinoza (1632-1677) believed the universe was eternal. Notice that they were born 200 years before Darwin's Origin of Species (1859).
